ClickHouse's Web UIs: How many do you know?

Mark Needham

ClickHouse ships with not one, not two, but three web UIs for running queries, all served straight from the server with nothing to install. In this video we explore the UK property prices dataset with each of them, passing one query from UI to UI to show what each is best at.

The three UIs:

  • Web Terminal (/webterminal): an interactive ClickHouse client session in your browser, over WebSockets. We describe a table, use \G for vertical output, and draw an ASCII chart with the bar() function.
  • Play (/play): write queries and see the results as a table or a chart. We turn the terminal query into a bar chart with FORMAT JSONCompactColumns, build a notebook with query and Markdown cells, and sort, filter and pin columns in the results.
  • SQL Console (/ui): a standalone build of the ClickHouse Cloud SQL console. We chart sales by property type as five lines, save the query, and explore the table's data preview, schema and column info.
