<SettingsInfoBlock type="Bool" default_value="1" />

<VersionHistory rows={[{"id": "row-1","items": [{"label": "26.6"},{"label": "1"},{"label": "New setting"}]}]} />

When enabled, INSERTs create new parts with projections.
Otherwise, they can be created by explicit [MATERIALIZE PROJECTION](/docs/reference/statements/alter/projection#materialize-projection)
or during merges with [materialize\_projections\_on\_merge](/docs/reference/settings/merge-tree-settings/materialize-projections#materialize_projections_on_merge).

<h2 id="materialize_projections_on_merge">
  materialize\_projections\_on\_merge
</h2>

<SettingsInfoBlock type="Bool" default_value="0" />

<VersionHistory rows={[{"id": "row-1","items": [{"label": "26.6"},{"label": "0"},{"label": "New setting"}]}]} />

When enabled, a merge rebuilds a projection that is missing from all of its source parts (for example because they were
inserted with `materialize_projections_on_insert = 0`), so the merged part has the projection.

Merges still only combine parts that share the same set of projections. To backfill a projection to all existing parts,
use an explicit [MATERIALIZE PROJECTION](/docs/reference/statements/alter/projection#materialize-projection). Projections
are also created during INSERTs with [materialize\_projections\_on\_insert](/docs/reference/settings/merge-tree-settings/materialize-projections#materialize_projections_on_insert).
